iPad, Android, Surface... Which tablet for your sales reps ?

By François Dumont

In

Digital transformation has completely changed our profession and our sales approach. The introduction of touch-screen tablets, the new version of the sales book for sales reps, is a real success, and for good reason! But how can they improve their sales performance? SalesApps tells you more.

How to choose a good sales book for sales reps ?

The tablet is certainly a tool that allows better productivity for your sales teams, whether for sales prospecting or for sales meetings.

Whether it is as a sales book, for your sales presentations, as an automatic link between your sales and marketing teams, or as a training support and backup of sales information needed by the sales teams...

No wrong decision here. In fact, a tablet will always be a tool that will multiply the efficiency of your sales teams! At least, as long as it comes with the right applications. You just need to find the right hardware, and especially the one adapted to your needs, in relation to the use that will be made of it.

While it may be tempting to base your choice of tablet (iPad and iPhone for example) on your phone fleet, the choice of this investment must be based on specific criteria:

  • Your IT department
  • Your technical infrastructure
  • The budget, according to your ambitions
  • Use your sales reps.

iPad: user experience, design and quality

The iPad is certainly at the top end of the tablet market. With a range that is regularly renewed, the iPad offers numerous possibilities for (almost) all budgets. From theiPad mini for the compact version, to the Air 2 model for excellent value for money, to the pro range with increased computing power and specific accessories such as a stylus or keyboard. Apple certainly offers many choices for professionals, as well as excellent sales book options for sales reps.

Why succumb to the iPad?

If the perceived quality is not in doubt, with a very mastered user experience, an iPad will always make an impression on a customer. In itself, it is already a certain sales aid.

Equipped with an ecosystem integrating many applications, its connectivity is simple, easy to use and many accessories are available according to your needs.

Although Apple's communication is always focused on the latest iPad, its range is wider than you might think. Moreover, the older models are very good with a good return on investment. Finally, the mastery of the integration of software and hardware with a very robust operating system ensures a good longevity and quality support.

Why hesitate?

Price, of course. It is a real discriminating factor, and quality, perceived or real, has a cost.

An iPad will always be bought "as is" without any real possibility of physical memory extension for example. A beautiful object, but "all in one", for which you will have to anticipate its use and its functioning.

Android: versatility, price and choice

Android tablets offer a lot of choice to buyers. The mobile operating system is made by Google, and the tablets are made by multiple independent manufacturers (from Samsung to Sony via Asus, Huawei or Lenovo to name a few).

This strategy offers unparalleled choice! From ultra low-cost to very high-end, with many screen size and feature options.

Most Android tablets offer a lot of different connectivity. Whether for file transfers with USB or micro SD, and for video presentations with HDMI, micro HDMI or MHL. Even if the performance and technical capabilities are to be put into perspective depending on the product. This last point is important, especially for the commercial presentations of your sales teams.

Why succumb to an Android tablet?

The numerous configuration options, as well as a wide selection, offer maximum compatibility with your basic needs.

Some Android tablets have an excellent price-performance ratio and some manufacturers put a lot of effort into building high-end products that would have nothing to envy to Apple.

Android tablets are generally designed in a modular fashion with the ability to add memory or additional accessories well supported by a robust OS.

Why hesitate?

Because each tablet is so different, making the right choice can be complicated. Some tablets have real technical limitations. There is a real gap between them and the more powerful ones.

You'll have to explore multiple options before you find the right one. Not to mention that some products do not fully integrate the Android ecosystem and the perceived image is often quite low-end. Moreover, the projection connectivity is very fragmented, not very ergonomic and the multiplicity of brands does not help you find the right accessories for your tablets.

In addition, not all accessories are compatible? Thus, it is sometimes necessary to plug them into the mains, limiting mobility and ease of use.

Finally, Android is very fragmented and does not facilitate the management of models and versions. You may have to wait several months before a manufacturer authorizes the update on its device. Not to mention that some versions may not be compatible with your tablet. The question of support is therefore crucial, especially if you have a limited IT department or if you don't want to overload it.

Microsoft Surface: a sales book for sales reps ?

Microsoft signs its arrival on the market of the professional touch tablets with the Surface. It offers a very interesting differentiating solution with its tablet/touch computer duality, which makes it a hybrid model. This has an impact on its cost, its perceived image and the user experience.

Why succumb to the Surface?

Clearly suited to a Windows infrastructure, the Surface is a perfect solution to combine the best of both worlds. A full-featured computer, with the Office 365 suite of applications for example, and a more mobile approach with a touchscreen tablet.

The image of quality and robustness is well present, and Windows 10 regulars will never be lost. The Surface can even replace a laptop for certain functions thanks to its sophisticated connectivity and native software designed for it. With or without a keyboard, with or without a stylus, it runs Office and Windows to perfection.

Why hesitate?

A latecomer to the tablet market, the Surface suffers from a smaller marketplace than Apple and Android for its native applications. Both a computer and a tablet, it is larger than a traditional tablet, but also a bit heavier. Windows 10, like its predecessors Windows 8 and 8.1, can feel a bit bulky at first and the user experience is not always optimal.

With an overall high price, its half-tablet, half-computer positioning limits the tactile effect in the relationship with the customer and, therefore, the global integration of the product in the presentation.

To sum up, while the choice of a tablet is important, it must also be perfectly adapted to the work of your sales teams. The effectiveness of your presentation and sales book for sales reps is indeed a major point.

The software suite is therefore an important criterion. You will have to find this balance, to ensure the best possible support to boost your business!
